Guam’s beach volleyball community will celebrate the life and generosity of the late Jimmy Dee with a Labor Day Weekend beach volleyball tournament.
The tournament — Si Yu’us Ma’ase Jimmy Dee — will pay tribute to Jimmy and his family for welcoming beach players to their beachfront property in Tamuning. Jimmy Dee died Aug. 19 and was laid to rest Thursday.
“We’ve been playing at Jimmy’s for as long as I can remember,” said Shintaro Okada, a longtime regular and former national team player for Guam. “Jimmy Dee and his family have never ever stood in the way of people coming down to play. They’ve always been very supportive.”
Born James Flores, Jimmy Dee was an entertainment icon for Guam. He wrote, arranged, performed, produced and even distributed numerous albums loaded with original music. Jimmy Dee’s voice was especially prominent during the holidays because he had a slew of Christmas songs popular with different generations.

The tournament was organized by another national team player, Tatiana Sablan. She was erecting the new poles that would support the nets for the tournament, which runs Saturday through Sunday, with finals projected for the late afternoon.
“This is the first tournament we’ve had since the start of COVID,” said Okada. “I wasn’t surprised that it filled. I was surprised that it filled in just a day.”
It was also free to enter the tournament, which was a fitting response to decades of Jimmy Dee’s generosity, she said.
Okada went to the courts right after work Friday to get some practice. The courts are situated at the beachfront of Jimmy Dee’s Bar and Grill.
“We get to celebrate his life doing what we all love to do,” said Okada. “To me, what I feel is that we are honoring him because he’s never been a deterrent to us playing. He’s always been a supporter. If you ever played beach volleyball regularly here, then you’ve played at Jimmy’s at some point. This tournament just kinda feels right. It also feels like, ‘What took us so long.’”
